In 2022, the law on using a phone while driving changed, the intention was to apply stricter legal rules regarding the use of mobile phones in cars.

Currently, It is illegal to hold a mobile phone and use it while driving a car, this means that your mobile phone should not be in your hand whilst driving, regardless of whether you are online or offline. For instance, you must not take videos or photos, send text messages, or browse the internet. The rules are the same for other devices that can receive and send data, as well as tablets and Sat Navs.

The law is exactly the same even in the following situations:

  • You have stopped at the traffic lights or in a traffic queue
  • Your car engine switches off when you are stationary
  • You are holding and using a mobile device in flight mode, or a device that’s offline

No, you cannot. Touching the screen of your phone while driving, is interpreted as using a mobile phone while driving, which is against the law.

If you would like to use your phone as a Sat Nav, you are required to set the route before beginning your journey. If you need to use your phone at any point to adjust the directions, you’ll need to park in a safe place first.

What is the fine if you are caught driving whilst using your mobile?

The penalty for using a mobile phone while driving is a fine of £200, as well as six points on your licence.
